The Level 3 Food Safety Award targets Management and Supervisory staff in the food catering, retail and manufacturing sectors. Typically such managers or supervisors would operate in the following areas:
Residential and Care Homes, Hospitals
Hotels, Pubs, Restaurants and Hospitality Catering
Schools and Prisons
HACCP / Safer Food Better Business
Cleaning & Disinfection
Applying & monitoring food safety measures
Contributing to food safety training of others
Temperature Control (Cooking, Chilling, Freezing, Hot Holding)
Cross Contamination Control
The aim of the Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety is to provide a knowledge and understanding of food safety principles and practices relevant to supervisors working the in the catering and hospitality sectors as well as manufacturing.
A knowledge and understanding of the expected behaviours with regard to compliance with relevant food safety legislation
A knowledge and understanding concerning the application and monitoring of good hygiene practices
The manager’s or supervisor’s role in the implementation of food safety management procedures
Recognition of the importance of staff training and the manager’s or supervisor’s contribution to it
The course is of 2 days duration (i.e 2 x 8 hours sessions) with some home study required
The examination duration is 1.5 hours and consists of a 45 question multi-choice examination
Candidates must achieve thirty correct answers to be awarded the certificate
A Pass will be awarded for 30 to 37 correct answers
A Distinction will be awarded for 38 to 45 correct answers
Candidates who may encounter difficulties in meeting the normal examination criteria may apply for special arrangements, for example an oral examination. The requirement for such special arrangements must be mentioned at the time of application
It is strongly recommended that applicants refresh this certificate every 3 years

Individual course fees for the Level 3 Food Safety Certificate is £190. This includes the examination and certificate fee which is payable to RSPH – Royal Society of Public Health.

Progression would normally be to the RSPH Level 4 Managing Food Safety Award which is aimed at Managers.
