RSPH or HABC Level 2 Food Safety
The Level 2 Food Safety certificate is aimed at all food handlers in the catering and hospitality sectors. Typically those requiring the certificate would include:
- Residential Homes - Retail Outlets
- Care Homes - Hotels
- Hospitals - Pubs
- Restaurants - Hospitality Catering
- Schools - Play Groups providing catering
- Prisons - Fast Food / Snack Bars

Course Aims

Course Outcomes
- To provide an understanding of the principles of food safety, and how to apply this knowledge to control hazards and prevent food poisoning. It is recommended that this certificate is refreshed every 3 years
Course Details
- The course is of 6 / 8 hours duration which is followed by a thirty question multi choice examination paper.
- The examination duration is 40 minutes
- Candidates must achieve 20 correct answers to be awarded the certificate.
- A pass will be awarded for 20 to 30 correct answers
- Special circumstances
- Candidates who may encounter difficulties in meeting the normal examination criteria may apply for special arrangements e.g. oral examination. This must be mentioned at the time of application for the course.
- It is strongly recommended that applicants refresh this certificate every 3 years

- The individual course fee for Level 2 Food Safety Certificate is £44 (this cost includes the examination fee which is payable to Royal Society of Public Health or HABC). Group rates for 10 or more are available

- Courses are held in all areas either “in house” at client's premises or at a local “off site” venue dependent on numbers.
- Progression would normally be to the RSPH or HABC Level 3 Food Safety Certificate which is aimed at Supervisory / Management staff with a responsibility for food handlers
RSPH or HABC Level 3 Food Safety
The Level 3 Food Safety Award is targeted at Management and Supervisory staff in the food catering, retail and manufacturing sectors. Typically those managers or supervisors would operate in the following areas:
- Residential Homes - Retail Outlets
- Care Homes - Hotels
- Hospitals - Pubs
- Restaurants - Hospitality Catering
- Schools - Prisons

Course Aims
- The aim of the Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety in Catering is to provide a knowledge and understanding of food safety principles and practices relevant to supervisors working the in the catering and hospitality sectors.
Course Outcomes
- The candidate will know and understand their expected behaviours with regard to compliance with relevant food safety legislation
- The candidate will know and understand how to apply and monitor good hygiene practices
- The candidate will know and understand their rule in the implementation of food safety management procedures
- The candidate will know and understand the importance of, and contribute to, staff training
Course Details
- The course is of 2 days duration, 2 x 8 hours, with a little home study
- The examination duration is 1.5 hours and consists of a multi-choice forty five question examination
- Candidates must achieve 30 correct answers to be awarded the certificate.
- A Pass will be awarded for 30 to 37 correct answers
- A Distinction will be awarded for 38 to 45 correct answers
- Special circumstances
- Candidates who may encounter difficulties in meeting the normal examination criteria may apply for special arrangements e.g. oral examination. This must be mentioned at the time of application for the course.
- It is strongly recommended that applicants refresh this certificate every 3 years
